Super Scattergories (PC) Review

Super Scattergories
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was one of the first games I got after I got my laptop. It works great! You only have to type in the first three letters of an answer, so that moves the game along. There are special rounds including:

Picture - find 12 things in the picture starting with the same letter
Matching - match two answers on the board with a common bond

The final round features 12 letters. You eliminate one letter at a time with each category that comes up. Not as easy as it sounds.

You play as two teams or you can play solo. If you're a younger player, they give you clues to help you out.

Overall, one of the best party games for your computer! The disc does need to be in the PC for you to play.

Product Description:
Amazon.com ReviewQuick--name a fabulous party game starting with the letter S! Super Scattergories from Hasbro Interactive turns your computer into a wise-cracking game-show host that will have even the designated drivers screaming at the tops of their lungs.Based on the familiar pencil-and-paper game, the object of the game remains to find members of particular categories; each answer must start with the same letter. The computer version adds some complexity--there's now five different games, including picture identification, category matching, and simple word listing. The answer interface simplifies the game a bit and speeds it up greatly--only the first three letters of a correct answer are required. Without worrying about misspellings or long guesses, the pace picks up dramatically. The look, sound, and feel of Super Scattergories is reminiscent of You Don't Know Jack, and play is just as fun solo or with teams of any size. While some of the animations might be poky if you have other programs running or a slower machine, the game clock seems to work fine even under the worst of conditions. If you want something new to distract your guests or just want to work on those language skills, Super Scattergories is just the thing. --Rob Lightner

Crusader No Remorse (PC CD-Rom) Gold Edition Review

Crusader No Remorse Gold Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Crusader - No Remorse - Origin Systems - Retail Box

Crusader: No Remorse, a hyper-violent shooter from Origin Systems. Forget the cheesy full motion video scenes and the obligatory bad acting. Forget the sometimes frustrating controls which can send your character jumping across the screen without warning. In Crusader, only one thing is important: Things blow up real good.

The game is set in a cartoon-like, Orwellian future. Individual rights are nonexistent, and every aspect of daily life has come under the control of the World Economic Consortium. As a defector from the WEC's elite Silencer force, you have lent your skills to the resistance movement. The tone is set by the excellent packaging materials, which recall the halcyon days of the late, great Infocom. Included is a Consortium handbook with scrawled notes from your resistance comrades and a hilarious newsletter showing everyday living in this brave new world, both of which give depth to the otherwise search-and-destroy nature of the game.

Avoiding the ubiquitous first-person perspective, Crusader utilizes a three-quarter overhead view, similar to Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure or later entries in the Ultima series. From this vantage point, you go through a series of lengthy missions, mostly just excuses to destroy everything in sight. And destroy everything you will, once you take a gander at the glorious SVGA graphics. The attention to destructive detail is mind-boggling. Shoot a Consortium chump in the back and he will buckle appropriately, a pool of blood slowly forming beneath him. Shoot virtually any piece of scenery and it will explode, igniting any unlucky bystanders who will run around screaming until they collapse in a heap of ashes. The game may be amoral as all get-out, but it sure is fun.

I downloaded a Tzar demo about a year ago for my then-7-year-old who loves playing chess and anything to do with strategy.I could hardly peel him away from the demo even to eat.I promised that if he got good grades, I'd buy him the game.He did get good grades, bugging me about the game the whole time. Now that he has the game, he's obsessed with it!Absolutely a great game that inspires real thinking, planning, and strategizing. He has no idea he's being educated while playing!

The level making system is impressive, physics are good, but the graphics and AI leave some to be desired, the graphics and AI look and act like, Half-Life 1 to Unreal tournament 1; And lacks outside terrain. But it is very fast and easy, you can get used to it in an hour and form there you can have a good 1-2 level game in 30 min. But I think you should find out for yourself, go to "fpscreator.com" and check out the demo.

Sudden Strike 2 (Windows) Review

Sudden Strike 2
Average Reviews:

This game is fun. Tanks and all sort of vehicles are well reproduced and sound real. Airplanes drop off paratroopers and boats land with marines like in a movie. Soldiers look maybe too small. They fight and die like little ants in a splatter cartoon. The idea of using enemy's stuff like guns and jeeps is great and adds a special "something". The scenarios are well conceived and maps are a joy for the eyes. But the longevity of the game looks to me pretty short. It is true that the editor gives you the possibility of designing new scenarios, but...don't get confused: the editor is not so friendly as they say and the several scenarios you can download from the net are difficult to understand unless you speak german. After all I find it better than Close Combat, because it's 3D, because tanks sound so real, because all vehicles and maps look so good. The IA is not too challenging though and you may prefer to fight in the multi-player option. SSII is fun but the best is yet to come. You may prefer to wait for an Age of Empire "The rise and fall of the III Reich" edition.

Ultima VII: The Black Gate Review

Ultima VII: The Black Gate
Average Reviews:

fistly, I bought the orignal release of this game the day it came out(1992 or something) so I have every rite to review it and say it's accurate. In fact, I was so exited I bougt it before I even recieved the computer I had ordered, and a chance it would not work on a 386 from "Microlabs".It was not only as good but better than i had expected. The game is elaborate in characters, dialgoue and the virtual world you interact in and at the time, any PC user raved about games like this, it was a craze and only now is it considered "old school" though it attracts many gamers and a DOS box program is based on the motivation of this game alone(though they support nearly all the DOS games now).you play an awsome altar ego, the Avatar, you lead a party and learn from them as much as with them you can become what you train to be via trainers once your XP/level is increased, your compainions likewies, thier are nearly a dozen who (potentally) join you.I found with Dupre at the last, I could aquire up to eight at once, but it isn't a good idea and the combat is terrible with such a group, the AI is optimised for maybe four or five but any amount is difficult to manage. The next issue is combat, i would even give it three stars or less for that if it wern't for such wonderful other stuff. You cannot directly(nor should you) control all characters, only the avatar but more over, the stratigy you can call on for thier tactics, in a word, stinks.Jaana is the worst, she is a potent member when you get killed but that is if she herself isn't killed and it is always the case.Raising her intelligence(and sentri) yields no real management in a cave or dungeon they always get caught in walls until you "cowardly" pull them out. They(and shamino) do indeed have a built in script, one you cannot change, and will dumbly walk into trouble, strip off all thier gear and dump it to the ground and start running like ninnies and not fleeing but into whatever crosses thier path(particularly shamino) it gets annoying and in a forest that hard earned equipment is gone. For good.If you raise one's strength/dex you have the best result(though not a good one) for continued survival early on.Intel only really is good for a party member(other than yourself) out in the open where flanking is possilbe.Iolo is best at utilizing this and the others do not despite thier stats.spark is the best all round with a bit of training. (as in better at all and everything than any other in any given field of study). He is perfect ubber-kid.I am guessing he must be based on R.G.(the creator's) son or something.
It is the best game I ever played I started with Ultima V in 1988 or something, btu this is best of all and SI(U7 seqaul)comes a close second.

Guild Wars is a new kind of MMORPG experience. It eliminates the less exciting aspects of world-map play by using a mission-based design, while keeping the features that make online role-players great. Make new allies in towns or outposts, form a party, and then go tackle a quest together. Your party always has its own unique copy of the quest map -- so camping, kill-stealing, and long lines to complete quests are all things of the past. As you play your quest, you have unprecedented levels of freedom: Your magic can build bridges and open up new pathways, or it can burn down forests and villages. Best of all, you'll never meet new players that you can't play with or compete against, because their characters are on a different Server than yours. In Guild Wars, all characters live in one seamless world.

DISNEY Tron 2.0 (Windows) Review

DISNEY Tron 2.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tron 2.0 is a game that does a lot of things. It has a storyline, it has action, it has puzzles, it has light-cycles, it has the glowing light and pools of energy, it is just like playing the movie.

The good - Once you get used to the way the world works its a lot of fun, walking around in the world of Tron, listening to the figures talk. It is primarily a first-person shooter, er. thrower, yes thats right, the primary weapon is the Tron disk which you can arc and bounce and de-rez opponents just like the movie, although I never did master it well enough to do much more than straight shots.

The story picks up 20 years after the Tron movie left off, you star as Jet, the son of the original Alan that was digitized, in a desperation move you are digitized to try and find the legacy Tron code and figure out what is happening to the system.

The bad - I found the world very wierd, the security stuff very difficult to understand and I really was going to give up on it for awhile. Eventually I figured out how it all worked and the game became a lot more fun, so if you find yourself getting bored or figidty, just give it a couple more levels and you should start having fun again!

There are light-cycles in the game and I never did enjoy that section, dying hundreds of times to finally make it through the level is not my idea of fun..but I suppose some people will like it.

Graphically its wonderful, with pretty light system requirements (its an old game now) but it looks really good. Because of the "glow" effect, everything looks correct. Surround sound is not supported but the game sounds pretty good.

All in all, a definate recommendation. If you liked the movie at all, this is your chance to star in an updated version! from the tiny little spaces in the old mainframe to the gigantic "net" this game is a lot of fun and more than a mindless shooter.

From what I remember of playing this game some years back it was pretty OK for its time. The graphics, interface, and cut scenes were good and the game play was not too bad either.

I never actually finished it because in order to make it harder more and more enemy units were thrown at you and it got to the point in one mission (which i never completed) I had a constant stream of enemies coming at me from all corners of the map which was just overwhelming and stupid.

If you've played the others this game is a classic.I briefly played WC1 when it released in 1991 or something but my pC was terribly weak and I stupidly took it back, I thought at that time I would NEVER EVER EVER be able to afford another PC EVER! (never say never) anyway it was one of my many regrets.I have played WC2 and it was great! The dialogue(though not voice acted) was as good as Strike Commander and the ships flew better if you can't use a joystick(and who can use a DOS joystick in Windows these days eh?)don't waste money on the gimicky "Kilrathi Saga" or the "Film can" WC#3 as they don't even have all the stuff meaning they are not retali versions at all.-in the case of the "Kilrathi Saga" they don't even work; as XP is the OS of today.Buy WC3 and the others separately, run it on DOSBOX 6.3-7.0 and you should do fine. You can get all WCs, Privateer, and Armada at reasonable rates from the sellers.

On the ship, you meet many old friends. Back in the cockpit, it's up to you to stop the Kilrathi and prove your innocence in the destruction of the Tiger's Claw.Wing Commander II is very similar to its predecessor. The space flight sequences are almost the same; there are new ships and new weapons. System Shock: Enhanced Edition Review

System Shock: Enhanced Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Besides my terrible opening statement, I do declare System Shock the first to be the ultimate it in difficult games.

To get it to work requires advanced knowledge of DOS, access to an old 486 machines, early Pentium stuff primarily. It also requires considerable patience.

This is a game that requires one be willing to take considerable time setting up, fixing over, and smoothing out.It will take hours to tweak the sound properly, make sure the technical faults present in DOS as well as in your drivers does not conflict with the game's sensitive and far-reaching usage of your machine's hardware.

When you're done, you've arrived at a blissful point I like to call "heaven"

This may be the first perfect game.It may also be the last.Aside from the difficulty of getting it working properly, there's not a damn thing to say wrong about it.

It's got a plot, a real good plot. One that you can't just shrug off or miss. It's important. This is a story that would stand up in a book for sure. It's a dark, tech-noir flavored super-cyberpunk influenced labyrinth of conspiracy, betrayal and deceit. One man's bid for self-preservation that causes a disaster that threatens the future of humanity.

It's also one of the first games to develop the concept of the HUD beyond Doom's use of it.It takes it to places where no other game did before it.That it's clunky, difficult and awkward at first (like the uncustomizeable control setup) fades away as one gets used to it.Other games, like Doom, Unreal Tournament (any edition) and even perhaps System Shock 2, feel almost simplistic in comparison. If you can master this game's controls and interface, most other games possess almost nothing of a learning curve in comparison. When mastered, the control scheme is effective enough.A bit uncomfortable evene then, but it gives you access to a very wide range of commands, and allows you to control your actions in far more elegant ways than most other games do.

Which is good, System Shock's environment is rich, detailed and massive.Working on a truely three dimensional engine, the environment renders damage, movement and space with renewed clarity. It puts the sprite concept to the ultimate test. This is a game which showed just how worthwhile polygon tech would be when other developers caught up.Visually speaking, it was more ahead of its time than Doom3 was in the 2004 crowd. It set unprecedented, system-taxing highs, so high that only high-end users (and even mid-range computers back then were EXPENSIVE) could run the game.It was bold in that sense, and in all other senses. The term boldness is appropriate for every aspect of this game. It's unlike any before it.It's quite unlike most games that have come since, with only its far different (and some argue far superior) sequel even matching its achievements.

At the time of its release the most sophisticated games besides it in terms of depth of play were Roleplays, which were obscure, obtuse and difficult for new players, except for such games as the Final Fantasy series, which built a linear narrative, almost voyeuristically following its characters, robbed almost entirely of the 'world' concept at the heart of Western Roleplay.System Shock matched them in every way, exceeded them in others.Obscure details, not worthy of a buy it?Don't buy it? Kind of recommendation...

It's a difficult thing on that level.Do you buy it?Don't you?

Do you have access to an old-as-Adam Smith computer? Are you familiar with using DOS and configuring startup and specification settings for individual games? Are you patient?

If the answer, unequivocally to all the above questions is "YES" then I do recommend it.The only alternative to that is, are you willing to peruse the VOGONS boards for the solutions you need? You can get it working under Windows XP (my hat is off to the VOGONS folk, they achieved a mammoth task in that regard) with much patience and effort.

In summary, if you've got the patience, go for it.If not, forget it.
