Bases Loaded 3 Review

Bases Loaded 3

Bases Loaded 3 is the third out of a series of four Bases Loaded games for the NES, and has improved graphics and soundtrack versus the first two. As with others in this series, the umpire calls "strikes", "balls" and "outs". There's a variety of pitching styles, the standard overhand, the sidearm and a few submarine pitchers. To throw a fastball, up to 111 m.p.h, hold UP, hold A(pitch), then quickly toggle directly to DOWN and back to UP (without any curve). The fastball usually results in easy ground outs. The pitching controls are more complex than BL1 and BL2, now including a sinker.

There is one team that can be edited to customize with your own stats (though it doesn't permanently save). You can adjust the pitchers' ERA, speed and stamina and the batters' hitting average, homeruns and base speed. Your starting pitchers should have a stamina of at least 60 if you want them to last the standard 6 innings.

Whatever team you select is automatically placed in a pennant race. The first game in versus computer mode is basically a "gimme" since the computer fielding is so weak. The second and subsequent games have tight computer fielding and most of your batters hit weak popups to infielders so you're lucky to get ten hits.

The pitching versus computer rewards the repeated use of one pitch, [up/right]+A then release the control pad halfway into the windup. Fatigue will eventually allow the computer batters to hit it, but simply substitute the next pitcher. It doesn't matter which pitcher you select since they all can strikeout computer batters with this pitch until they tire. The fielding is also way too easy once I got used to the terribly limited variety of ball flight paths, and it's too easy to pickoff runners or be pickoffed yourself. Bases Loaded 3 is better than Bases Loaded 1 in terms of graphics, soundtrack and faster pace, but not the gameplay.

R.B.I. Baseball 3 Review

R.B.I. Baseball 3

Although its graphics are archaic by today's standards, RBI Baseball for the original NES continues to provide me and my friends countless hours of entertainment and competitive action. The game has several modes of play to choose from, including watch mode. And while playing against the computer quickly becomes tiresome, the game's two-player mode is what gives it its alluring feel and makes it a classic. Thanks to a few subtle changes from real baseball (such as the 16-man rosters that limit each team to 4 pitchers and 4 position players off the bench), the two-player game has a great deal of strategy to it.In addition, each player is highly individualized and has his own feel. The small crew of Japanese game developers who programmed RBI Baseball back in the late 1980s had remarkable foresight and true understanding of baseball as they were able to create a simple game that has withstood the test of time.

The game showcases heavy hitters like Reggie Jackson, Will Clark, and Andre Dawson as well as aces Nolan Ryan, Fernando Valenzuela, and Mike Krukow. There are also players like Jose Canseco and Roger Clemens who display superhuman batting and pitching ability, even in the world of RBI Baseball. The game-play is surprisingly accurate and reflects the true nature of baseball in that almost any player can affect the outcome of the game. With a skilled gamer, a nobody like Bruce Hurst can have the same type of impact as a Roger Clemens. The quirks to this game are like no other - these are things like tandem fielding, cocked bats, and the catch and pose, to name a few.No game is perfect, but the glitches in RBI Baseball are such fan favorites, that there is speculation to whether they were intentionally injected into the game.Such glitches include bunting an inside the park homerun, having a fielder run into the stands, and snowfall!

5 stars to the greatest two-player sports game of the NES era (and perhaps ever!).
