Xbox Spherex 51000 6-Piece 5.1 Surround Sound System Review

Xbox Spherex 51000 6-Piece 5.1 Surround Sound System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually do not own a XBOX.I want a SMALL surround sound system for my living room and I don't want too many bulky electronics.I decided to for for Spherex based on many raved reviews. The satellite speakers are based on the highly-regarded Omnipolar technology developed by Mirage system.

I was not disappointed

Out of the box there's MINIMAL adjustment needed - just hook up your TV's analog output and your DVD player's digital output to the subwoofer. There are 2 optical and one coaxial digital inputs and one analog input (total of 4 inputs). No need to buy bulky receiver / amplifier. After breaking-in the satellite speakers for a few hours (this is very important) and then put the subwoofer in the corner of my living room (where it should be placed), I fired up the system for critical listening.

My first impression is that this is a SUPERB, neutral sounding system.I also have a Rotel / Vandersteen surround system in my theater room (over 10 times the cost of the Spherex) and I have to say the Spherex system held on its own.Its sound stage is incredibly wide and deep, especially for my small living room. The treble is smooth, not fizzy. The subwoofer is full and tight-sounding, perfectly matching the satellites.I then hook up my home theater PC to it and play my classical MP3 collection ripped at 256 kbps via the Dolby Pro-logic II mode - again superb sounding.

For movies the Dolby Digital and DTS works superbly as well. The sound stage is again incredibtly wide and immersive.Try to watch the Lord of the Ring with Spherex and you will see what I mean.

Now the down-side.There's some mild static noise when no music is playing - it does not bother me at all, considering there's nothing in this price range (surround receiver + surround sound speakers) that can match the Spherex (I paid $380 shipped).Secondly, it doesn't look like audiophile product - then again it's only $380.Third, it doens't use regular speaker cables (it use RCA plug speaker cable - go figure.)I need more than 20 feet for my rear speakers so I have to go to Radioshack to buy longer cables.

Overall I am thrilled by the sound quality of the Spherex system.
Five Mirage Omnipolar speakers + a subwoofer + a receiver easly cost over $900.I have not compared it to the Logitech Z-5500 system which is probably Spherex's closed competition but it does not have the Omnipolar technology.

Bottom line - anyone looking for a small surround sound speaker system and don't want bulky electronics should check the Spherex out.YOU DON'T NEED A XBOX TO ENJOY THIS SYSTEM.

Product Description:
Developed in conjunction with the Game Audio Network Guild (GANG)--which sets the "reference standard" for video game audio--the Spherex Xbox 5.1 surround sound system delivers a sophisticated 360-degree home theater experience whether you're playing Halo 2, watching Lord of the Rings, or listening to the latest U2 release. The system features five independent audio inputs (three digital, one analog, and one USB 1.1 port), so it connects easily to your game console, DVD player, CD player, portable audio device, or computer. Sound is distributed through the five satellite speakers, each with a 3-1/2-inch woofer and 3/4-inch metal dome tweeter, and the dual-vented subwoofer with its 8-inch matrix cone woofer. The system's audio enhancements include Omnipolar technology, which rations sound (30 percent direct to 70 percent reflected) in a 360-degree dispersion pattern, so listeners can position their satellite speakers in a variety of configurations, along with MaxxBass augmentation, which extends the lower end of the frequency response to deliver deeper, more natural bass tones from both the subwoofer and the satellites themselves.
The system comes with a powerful 300-watt DDX amplifier (50 watts x 3, 25 watts x 2, and 100-watt subwoofer), which eliminates signal distortion by maintaining a digital signal flow to each speaker. And thanks to the Aureus digital signal processor, listeners can enjoy rich surround sound regardless of the format, with decoding for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Pro Logic II. Additional features include an expansion slot for future compatibility and an infrared remote control with an IR receiver. The system also carries an impressive 10-year limited warranty.
What's in the Box
Five satellite speakers, subwoofer, 6-channel amplifier, remote control, IR receiver, digital fiber-optic cable, three 10-foot speaker cables, two 23-foot speaker cables, quick setup guide, user's manual.

Altec Lansing 5.1 Speaker System, Super Subwoofer, THX Certified, A Must For Gaming, Model: ADA995. Review

Altec Lansing 5.1 Speaker System, Super Subwoofer, THX Certified, A Must For Gaming, Model: ADA995.

These speakers were manufactured for Dell by Altec Lansing. They are one of the finest sounding computer speakers I've ever heard.THX certified, the dual 6-1/2" woofers produce enough solid bass to make my neighbors angry. The sub is very well controlled and does not sound boomy.

Each of the five satellite speakers has a tweeter and a small mid-range/bass speaker. The main and surround speakers stand upright while the center channel lies on its side and should be placed above the monitor as it faces down slightly. Each speaker has a tapered screw hole in the back so it can be mounted on a stand.

The speakers have about 200 watts of power and get very loud.My main gripe with the system is that there is no volume control for the system except for a level control for the subwoofer.I have to keep the volume on the computer turned all the way down to use them without producing aural discomfort.(They get loud enough to hurt!)

These initially retailed for $400.I would put them up against just about any computer speaker on the market.

Pioneer HTS-GS1 5.1-Channel Surround Sound System for the Xbox 360 Review

Pioneer HTS-GS1 5.1-Channel Surround Sound System for the Xbox 360
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I shopped and priced around extensively, and the Pioneer HTIB system was the clear choice to add on to my Xbox 360.First, and foremost, this is a well designed "compact" home theater system that goes very well with a 360.It's color scheme blends right in with the Microsoft game sytem.Pioneer got all the details right, even down to the XBOX-like "univeral" remote control.

The nearest competitor to Pioneer's HTS-GS1 is the Spherex 51000 HTIB 5.1 Channel surround system, also license by Microsoft specifically for the Xbox 360.In a head to head comparison, to me, the Pioneer integrates best, mainly because it "looks" like it belongs with the Xbox and alsohas more user friendly system controls and by far is more flexible to set up whether used with the Xbox or not.I cannot comment on differences in terms of purely audio performance, but the Spherex is only rated for 300 watts total output. The latter may not be a fair comparison - read on for more on this.

These two systems are currently selling in retail stores close to the same price point (around $200).Since there introduction, both have been deeply discounted from original list price of $499.Overall, I feel the HTS-GS1 offers the most bang for the buck.

The surround speakers are uniquely and cleverly designed. The front and rear speaker are actually "stackable" which allows a front surround stage 5 channel sound speaker placement arrangement. This stacking feature is not possible on Spherex system with its omni surround satellite speakers which must have free air space above each speaker to work properly.

Front speaker stacking is an extremely useful feature for the non-purist audiophile. It lends itself to a much faster and simpler system set up, eliminating need for long(er) - hard to disguise - routing of speaker wires to the back of your listening room area. However, this diminishes the full effectiveness of a surround sound system, yet in the case of the HS-GS1, I did not find it overly detracting from the system's "virtual" surround or front-only sound stage experience.Furthermore, I appreciate having a CHOICE in satellite speaker placement and opted to go this route for obvious advantages offered in eliminating the hassle of locating and mounting separate rear speakers and wiring complications.

The surround sound "effects" are still quite evident in this front only arrangement, because the unique stackable left and right double decker speakers can be rotated independently rotated to aim them in different dirrections. This design does an adequate job of simulating a four corner surround sound, if not fully "immersive" listening experience.

I may eventually take the additional time to separate and relocate the rear satellite speaker to the back of my listening area.Pioneer provides plenty of speaker wire for that purpose if so desired. But for now, I am enjoying the system in the front surround mode only, and saved at least another couple of hours of tedious installation work routing the rear speaker wires far away from the audio amplifier (subwoofer) origination connections.

One thing that the average consumer should know is that most comparable HTIB systems are "hyped" in terms of their true (<1% THD) audio output power rating per channel per the FTC.In actuality this Pioneer system has a total of 155 watts output power; 25W each for the four satelites, 30W for the somewhat larger size center speaker and only 25W for the subwoofer.Nevertheless, this is more than enough power for a small to medium size room and if you crank up the volume you can be prepared to damage your eardrums.

The audio amplifier built into the bottom of the subwoofer enclosure has four audio inputs, 3 digital (2 of which are for TOSLINK fiber optic cable ready inputs and 1 coaxial input), plus one tradional (wire pair) of analog audio inputs.Pioneer, generously, includes a fiber optic cable but no other audio input cables. For 5.1 channel sound decoders, such as built-in to Xbox 360, or sometimes passively outputed from a HDTV, this cable comes in handy.(Don't forget to remove the protective dust covers on both ends of this cable before attaching to your Xbox 360 (or other output device) to the digital audio input on the back of the single enclosure, 5.1 channel audio amplifier - AM/FM stereo receiver -subwoofer.The latter has a built-in power supply and AC line cord is included with the product.

All five, individual (supplied) speaker wires are color coded to make a do-it-yourself installation that much easier to get right the first time, although bare wire attachments are still need to be properly connect the back of each standalone speaker.Unlike other HTIB system, that are permanently pre-wired, Pioneer uses standard "quick-connect" speaker wire color coded connectors to further aid in ease of installation. The subwoofer has a short pre-wired "jumper" on the back panel to quick connect to the amplifier.

As I said the remote control for this system is especially well suited for Xbox 360, TV, and home theater integration. It supports all three! In addition to buttons for controlling the 5.1 channel audio sound, it also has another set of buttons to operate the Xbox 360 and optional HD-DVD player, Media Center PC, and also can be programmed to support most TVs.

The remote buttons dedicated to 360 control are segregated, and stylized to closely mimic the same buttons on Xbox 360 game controller as well as Microsoft's (sold separately) Universal Media Remote. On the down side, unfortunately the remote is not backlighted and none of the buttons glow in the dark when pressed. However, the Xbox Guide button is raised and larger than all the others, and the green, red, blue, yellow, color coded button that correspond to game controllers A-B-X-Y buttons, all in one row, are easy to use.

The remote control operates a nicely designed system controller with a digital readout display, with its own set of basic control buttons.Btw, a big disadvantage with the competing Spherex system is that it can ONLY be operated by remote control; undoubtedly a cost cutting tradeoff.

The bottom line, this Pioneer system is a very high quality product that WILL EXCEED the average electronic consumers expectations, and therefore is worth every penny of the purchase price.

You really can't get much better than this sound system for the price.I was look for something to simply make the sound coming from the PSP a little louder so I could actually watch a movie, and hear it.This did the trick. The sound clarity isn't the best, but it is pretty good just for watching movies, and for 20 bucks, youcant really complain.
Overall, I am pleaeed with the purchase.Louder sound, good protability, good price.I would recommend if you are looking for an inexpensive set-up just to make your psp louder for movies.Would kind of suck for music. Also, it does hld the psp at a good angle for desktop movies.

Kinyo GZ-401 4.1 Game Zone Surround Sound System Review

Kinyo GZ-401 4.1 Game Zone Surround Sound System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to have these (under the Kinyo brand) hooked up to my computer & TV for years. For the price nothing sounded better. It ran great for years. But my home burnt down & I lost almost everything.

I was happy to find the same speakers under the Game Zone brand.

The woofer rattled a little with any decent amount of bass. Upon opening it up, I found it was still labeled "Kinyo" on the back & inside, & identical to my old unit, except the old one didn't rattle.

Inside I find one of the philips screws holding the speaker in place had a stripped head, & wasn't fully screwed down. Had to unscrew it with pliers. The speaker was also glued down inside, but where the defective screw was, the seal was broken. Had to pull the speaker to re-glue it, & then screw it back down... replacing the bad screw.

The rattle was fixed. Lots of bass. But upon turning it up more, there was another rattle... before I got the bass up to where my old one could go.

The plastic front panel was rattling. It gets screwed & glued from the inside too. I have to take the whole thing apart & pull the speaker again to fix it.

I got what appeared to me to be a repaired or refurbed model, but paid for a new one. My identical old one ran good for years.

It's a shame, I could use another one for another room. But am I gonna get a used & poorly repaired one again that I'll have to spend all evening to fix or a good new one?

JBL On Tour Plus Portable Speaker System Review

JBL On Tour Plus Portable Speaker System
Average Reviews:

I purchased the JBL On Tour Plus specifically for my PSP.The design and styling match the PSP perfectly, and the included stand fits well.Nice tocuh on the stand are rubber pads to prevent scratches.Overall presentation is very good, case is sturdy, but bulky; quite a bit larger than the pieces are seperately.

Audio quality is good, volume wasn't as high as I expected, even on AC.Won't be using the On Tour as a stero for a loud party.Watching a movie sounds great, though. Can plug any MP3 player/psp/discman, etc. into it that has a regular audio jack.

Takes 4 AAAs, or included AC adaptor.Buttons are flush, vol up/down, both to turn off.

Would recomend for any PSP owner who wants to watch movies (or just listen to tunes).Audio is good, setup is very quick & easy.

PSP iSound Black Review

I was looking for speakers for my PSP so I could listen to the music on it like a boom box. Unfortunately, I could not find the Logitech Playgear Amp anywhere online so I settled for the PSP iSound. The sound quality is not great but for the price I paid ($7 shipped), it was ok. The drawback of these speakers is that they don't have an input for an AC adapter so you always have to have 3 AAA batteries available.

In closing, if you can find the Logitech speakers go with those, otherwise you can pick these up but only if you can get them cheap like I did.

First off, after selling one other MP3 player, which had very expensive accessories, and purchasing the sony PSP - which has very large amount of do dad's that are NOT nearly as expensive as the aforementioned device I unloaded...... this Psyclone Nodus Sound System was one of the reasons I ditched the other DEVICE.

This has great sound, and has a remote. The remote has skip song, volume and mute and pause/play .. plus due to it having a aux out in the back (every device no matter how modern, should have an aux out) the remote has a button for that.I hook this monster up to my tiny little color television.Life is good.

Great sound. And, snap your PSP in, and off you go to wherever you wanna go, just gotta have an outlet. Not really made for ALL weather, but good for me out on my back deck when in my spa.

Good stuff, and I bought mine at a store that sounds like Sparget. For 30 dollars less.

Have fun.
